Saint Mary's begins the 2013 season with many new faces, mixed in with the veteran upper classmen. On the mound, the Gaels welcome back Friday starter Mark Anderson, who missed all of last season with Tommy John surgery. Anderson won a combined 13 games in 2010 and 2011, which included eight complete games.
With two valuable starters coming back from Tommy John surgery (Anderson and Kurt Jahnke), the Gaels are also stocked with starting pitching depth with eight players who can be considered starting pitchers. Those include Mills, Griset and Brockett, who are starting the weekend games for the Gaels.
The bullpen is anchored by Patrick Keane who went 4-0 with seven saves last season. Keane had a 2.44 ERA and struck out 36 batters in 48 innings of work.
At the plate, Collin Ferguson returns as SMC's leading hitter. As a freshman, Ferguson was named a Louisville Slugger freshman All-American and hit .315 with 18 extra base hits. Brendan Kalfus also returns in right field after earning WCC All-Conference honors, hitting .322 in conference play.
Cal State Northridge comes off a 23-30 record in 2012 and a 13-12 mark at home. The Matadors were predicted to finish eighth out of 10 teams in the 2013 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll.
On the mound, CSUN features Keel, the 2012 Big West Freshman of the Year. Keel went 6-3 with a 2.07 ERA, leading the Matadors and earning the Friday starter position.
Miles Williams returns for the Matadors after leading CSUN in runs scored and RBI. Cal Vogelsang also returns after hitting .278 with a team-high 11 doubles.
After the four game series in Northridge, Saint Mary's returns home for its home opening series against Chicago State. On Friday February 22nd, the Gaels face the Cougars at 2:00 p.m. at the new Louis Guisto Field.
