NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost to Cal State Northridge 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. The Gaels return home for their home opening series beginning Friday against Chicago State.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 1-3 while CSUN improves to 3-1.
The Gaels got on the board first in the second inning as Connor Hornsby singled to put two on with one out. Shawn O'Brien and Hornsby took second and third on a double steal before Riley Heinzer grounded out to the right side for an RBI and the 1-0 advantage.
CSUN got to the Gaels in the middle innings scoring four in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth frames.
With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Christopher Akmon doubled down the left field line for two RBI to close out the scoring at 8-3.
Saint Mary's returns home to face Chicago State on Friday in its home opener at the new Louis Guisto Field. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. SMC and CSU will then return to the field at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
