MORAGA, Calif. -- With the Saint Mary's women's tennis team trailing at No. 7-ranked Stanford, Danielle Flores found herself in a bit of a pressure-packed situation.

The sophomore from San Diego, Calif. won the first set of Saturday's match against No. 33-ranked Ellen Tsay 6-4 and looked to have a handle on things at No. 3 singles.

That momentum shifted in the next set, as Tsay took the second 6-0 to force a deciding third.

By then, Flores wasn't just playing to finish out her day. The Gaels needed the win to stay alive, trailing 3-2 with only two matches left.

That's when Flores lent her contribution to a historic day for Saint Mary's. She bounced back strong, winning the third set 6-2 to keep hope alive and eventually set the stage for the Gaels' landmark 4-3 win over the Cardinal.

For rallying to keep the day going, and for doing it against a highly ranked foe, Flores has been named Saint Mary's Student-Athlete of the Week.

Flores also played a role in another key part of Saturday's victory. Together with Jenny Jullien, she helped the Gaels earn a crucial point in doubles with an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot.

Since they became partners and moved to No. 1, Flores and Jullien have not lost. They are 3-0 at that position entering play this week.

Flores and the No. 45-ranked Gaels will be back in action Saturday at noon when they host No. 3 UCLA at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
