MORAGA, Calif. -- After posting a pair of impressive men's basketball performances last week that led to Saint Mary's victories, Gaels senior Matthew Dellavedova was named the SMC Student-Athlete of the Week.
A native of Maryborough, Victoria, Australia, Dellavedova averaged 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals in SMC's West Coast Conference victories over Pepperdine and Santa Clara. He scored 25 in the 87-48 win in Malibu, then added 21 points in an 80-67 victory over the longtime rival Broncos at McKeon Pavilion.
Late in the first half against Santa Clara, Dellavedova scored his second basket of the game and became the school's all-time scoring leader. He is already the career leader in assists, 3-point field goals and games started. He will set the record for free throw percentage and, when Saturday's WCC Tournament semifinal tips-off, he will tie Omar Samhan for the most appearances in a Gael uniform.
Saint Mary's finished the regular-season with a stellar 26-5 overall record and a 14-2 mark in league play. The Gaels tied a school-record with 14 league wins, equaling last year's record - the second-highest total in WCC history.
The Gaels return to action Saturday in an 8:30 p.m. WCC Tournament semifinal contest at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The game will be televised by ESPN2 and a live audio stream will be available on SMCGaels.com.
