EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 73-ranked Saint Mary's men's tennis team left Oregon Sunday with a bitter taste in its mouth as the Gaels were swept 7-0 by the No. 40 Ducks.
Saint Mary's (6-7) had its best chance of the day at No. 1 and 4 singles, where Jesse Kiuru dropped a tough three-set marathon against Jeff Mullen and Seif El Sherbini lost in an equally tough three-setter to Daan Maasland.
Kiuru took the first set 6-2, then dropped a second-set tiebreaker 7-3. A lengthy third set went Mullen's way, with Oregon's top player winning 10-8 to take the match.
El Sherbini lost the first set 6-1, but came back to win the second 7-6. In the third, Maasland came through in much the same way Mullen did, winning 10-8 to claim the victory.
Oregon (12-1) took every other singles match in straight sets. The Ducks also swept doubles play to earn the first point of the day.
Saint Mary's now returns home for key West Coast Conference action next weekend. It starts on Saturday against Gonzaga, then concludes on Sunday against Portland. Both matches are scheduled for a noon start.
