MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team took a seventh inning lead but could not hold on as Utah Valley defeated the Gaels 9-6 in 10 innings on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 5-13 while Utah Valley improves to 8-10.
Down 5-3 in the seventh inning, the Gaels pushed across three runs to take the lead. Trevor Ellison had a leadoff single, followed by consecutive triples by Ricky Boas and Anthony Gonsolin. Brenden Kalfus would hit the go-ahead sac fly to give the Gaels a 6-5 lead.
UVU tied the game in the ninth after a lead off double. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and would score on a hard hit ball with the SMC infield drawn in.
In the bottom of the ninth, SMC got two runners on with two outs but could not push across the potential winning run.
UVU had four hits in the 10th inning and scored three runs to take the 9-6 lead.
Jordan Mills went five innings and earned a no decision. Kelsey Outram went two scoreless innings for SMC. Patrick Keane (1-2) took the loss but pitched well in the eighth and ninth innings, giving the Gaels a chance to win.
Braden Poole earned the win for UVU, pitching two scoreless frames.
Darian Ramage and Gonsolin had multi-hit games for SMC. Ramage, Gonsolin, Kalfus, Anthony Villa, Nikko Seanz and Boas had RBI.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Saturday against Utah Valley. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on the SMC campus.
