MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's cross country/track team has added yet another athlete to its ever-growing program, as head coach Marty Kinsey announced Wednesday the signing of Saint Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda (Calif.) runner Kimberly Avalos.
"Kimberly has tremendous upside and will improve at a great rate," Kinsey said. "She didn't really follow a traditional long distance plan through high school until this summer. She played a lot of soccer and with now sole focus on running she was able to improve tremendously in her senior year. Track should be a lot of fun for Kim this spring."
Avalos is a two-time state qualifier in Cross Country. Her junior year, she placed 16th in the Division V 5K race, finishing in 19:29. She would better that time by 46 seconds her senior year at the CIF state championship race, finishing in an impressive 18:43 and placing inside the top 10 with a sixth-place finish.
"Her improvements and commitment to move up to the D-1 level will bring her career to new heights," Kinsey said. "She joins a team that is growing in numbers and talent each season. She is a great student as well and has a very enjoyable nature about her that fits right in with what we are building here at Saint Mary's."
Avalos will joins Alyssa Gutcher and Ali Teliha as new Gael runners in the fall.
