MORAGA, Calif. -- A chance to stay atop the West Coast Conference standings yielded a very motivated Saint Mary's women's tennis team Tuesday as the Gaels defeated visiting San Diego 5-0 at Korth Tennis Complex.
With the win, No. 43-ranked Saint Mary's improves to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in WCC play. No. 51 San Diego drops to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Saint Mary's earned its first point Tuesday thanks to good play at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
The duo battled with Cara Brown and Marta Stojanovic, eventually getting the break the Gaels needed to take control. Isip and Leitz finished off an 8-6 win and gave Saint Mary's the first point.
Saint Mary's added to the lead quickly in singles, as Danielle Flores won her match at No. 3 when San Dieg's Shani Blecher retired after the first set. Isip pushed the lead to 3-0, defeating Stephanie Hoffpauir 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
No. 1 singles player Jenny Jullien would clinch the match for the Gaels, defeating No. 108-ranked Laura Claus 6-4, 6-2. Jullien moved up to No. 17 in the national singles rankings on Tuesday, a one spot bump from her previous rank of 18.
Catherine Leduc earned the final point of the day, winning by retirement at No. 5.
Saint Mary's continues WCC play on Saturday when it hosts BYU at 11 a.m.
