PROVO, Utah – The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals with a 59-55 win over Brigham Young at the Marriott Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Gaels ended the game on a 9-0 run to take the road victory and advance to the final-8 of the WNIT.
With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 23-10, while BYU’s season ends at 23-11.
Danielle Mauldin led the Gaels with 18 points and eight rebounds, giving her 342 in her career. The single season SMC record is 344 by Jermisha Dosty, followed by 343 by Louella Tomlinson.
The Gaels also got a big game from Carli Rosenthal with season-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jackie Nared was also in double-figures with 13 points while Kate Gaze added six points and a career-high tying eight assists. Morgan Hatten added six points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Gaels were trailing 55-50 at the final media timeout with 3:49 remaining. SMC would execute big plays down the stretch, including two Gaze to Rosenthal field-goals to push SMC ahead. The Gaels defense tightened up and did not allow another point the rest of the way and the Gaels knocked down free-throws to put the game away.
The Gaels started the game off strong, hitting their first three shots and taking a 6-0 lead. BYU chipped away and used an 11-0 run to take a 19-13 lead with 7:32 left in the half. Mauldin had a nice base line lay-up to stop BYU’s scoring run. At half, the Cougars led the Gaels 26-22.
In a strange twist, in all three meetings between SMC and BYU this season, the team leading at halftime has lost each game.
Saint Mary’s will play its quarterfinal game at some point between March 29 and April 1. The Gaels will face the winner of the Utah at Pacific match-up tomorrow night. There is a chance the game will be played in McKeon Pavilion, so please check back frequently to SMCgaels.com and our twitter page.
