MORAGA, Calif. -- A tough three-match stretch to finish the regular season begins on Sunday for the Saint Mary's women's tennis team as the Gaels head to Silicon Valley to take on Santa Clara at noon.
Ranked No. 40 in the latest ITA national rankings, Saint Mary's (10-7, 5-0 West Coast Conference) has played especially well of late.
Victories over No. 26 Oklahoma, No. 51 San Diego and BYU have the Gaels riding a three-match winning streak entering this weekend.
Strong play up and down the lineup has been the highlight of that streak. Beginning with singles due to possible bad weather, Saint Mary's cruised in its most recent win, a 5-1 triumph over BYU.
That match featured wins at Nos. 1 through 5 singles for the Gaels, with each coming in straight sets.
Leading the way atop the lineup continues to be junior Jenny Jullien. Ranked No. 17 nationally, Jullien has also won her last three matches, with all coming in straight sets. Two of those wins came over ranked opponents.
Santa Clara enters Wednesday's match at Stanford 7-7 overall and 3-1 in WCC play. The Broncos last conference match came at Pepperdine, with the Waves prevailing 6-1.
Katie Le should line up at No. 1 singles for Santa Clara, and she comes into the week as the WCC's second-highest ranked singles player at No. 28. Le and Jullien last faced each other in January at the Cal Winter Invitational, with Jullien scoring the 7-5, 6-3 win in her first match of the 2013 season.
After Sunday's match, Saint Mary's returns home to finish its regular season against Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. From there, the Gaels will head to the WCC Championships in San Diego on the final weekend of April.
