SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team struck first Sunday with a win in doubles but Santa Clara rallied in singles to take a 4-3 win in West Coast Conference action.
The defeat is Saint Mary's first in WCC play this season, and the Gaels now sit at 10-8 overall and 5-1 in conference. Santa Clara is 9-8 overall and 5-1 in conference.
Saint Mary's got started quickly, winning the doubles point to take the early lead. Jenny Jullien and Danielle Flores teamed to get the 8-4 win at No. 1, and Catherine Isip paired with Audrey Leitz for the 8-6 victory at No. 2.
Santa Clara responded in singles though, winning at No. 1, 3, 5 and 6. The win at No. 1 came in a match of the WCC's two highest-ranked players, with No. 28-ranked Katie Le getting the 7-5, 7-6 win over No. 18 Jullien. The two are now 1-1 against each other this season, with Jullien owning a win at the Cal Winter Invitational.
Senior captain Catherine Isip won her match Sunday, prevailing 7-6, 6-2 against Kelly Lamble at No. 2. Jade Frampton scored SMC's other win, a 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 4.
The Gaels now turn their attention to the final two matches of the regular season. Pepperdine visits on Friday for a 12:30 p.m. showdown, then Loyola Marymount comes to Korth Tennis Complex on Sunday at 11 a.m. in SMC's final regular season match.
