Saint Mary’s enters the week coming off a series win over Georgetown and a loss on Tuesday at UC Davis. Saint Mary’s has faced Loyola Marymount and San Francisco in WCC play, winning a game in each series.
Brenden Kalfus leads the Gaels and the WCC in batting average with his .383 mark. Kalfus also enters the weekend with a 15-game hitting streak. He leads the Gaels with 13 multi-hit games.
Markus Melgosa is hitting .377 this season, which would rank second in the WCC, but he does not have enough at-bats per game to qualify for the title at this point.
Collin Ferguson leads the Gaels with 50 total bases and four home runs. Anthony Villa is hitting .277 and leads SMC with eight doubles and 23 RBI.
On the mound, Ben Griset has been SMC’s ace, with 50.0 innings pitched and just eight earned runs (1.44 ERA). Griset has thrown three complete games in seven starts and is 3-2 with 50 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .201 against him. Griset was the WCC Pitcher of the Month for March.
Jordan Mills (2-3, 3.05 ERA) and Ryan Brockett (2-4, 3.00 ERA) have also been solid in weekend starts. Patrick Keane leads the Gaels with five saves and 13 apperances.
Last year against Gonzaga at Louis Guisto Field, each game was decided by two runs or less as SMC won the Friday game but the Bulldogs captured the series.
Gonzaga is led by Marco Gonzales with a .352 average while Mitchell Gunsolus is hitting .300 with a team-high 48 total bases. Alex Bonczyk leads GU with seven stolen bases and is hitting .294. Clayton Eslick is hitting .261 and has two of GU’s three home runs this season.
On the mound, Auturo Reyes leads GU in appearances with 10 and a 1.30 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched. Derek Callahan (2-1, 2.56 ERA), Gonzales (4-2, 2.89 ERA) and Tyler Olson (5-2, 3.11 ERA) lead GU in starts this season.
