MORAGA, Calif. -- A predictably close match between two talented squads broke against the Saint Mary's men's tennis team Wednesday as the Gaels fell 4-3 to visiting San Francisco.
Saint Mary's is now 9-10 overall and 3-2 in West Coast Conference play. San Francisco improves to 10-6-1 and 2-3 in conference.
San Francisco captured the doubles point to begin the match, winning at No. 3 and No. 1 to earn the advantage.
Joakim Norstrom would square the match with one of his biggest wins of the season. A 6-1, 6-3 win over Thai Tu, who usually plays No. 1 singles for San Francisco, gave Norstrom plenty of confidence and evened the score at 1 all.
Samuel Bloore put the Gaels up 2-1 with a straight sets win at No. 5, but the Dons evened things with a win at No. 1.
The teams would again trade blows, with San Francisco winning at No. 6 and Seif El Sherbini claiming a point for SMC with a three-set win at No. 4.
That left No. 3 singles to decide things, and after Tuomas Manner won the first set 6-4 for the Gaels, San Francisco's Nils Skajaa rallied to win the next two sets and give the Dons the match.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Friday when it takes on Pepperdine at 4 p.m. at Riviera Country Club.
