MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's rowing team heads to a familiar body of water this weekend as it travels to the greater Sacramento area to row in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships at Lake Natoma.
Action begins Saturday and continues into Sunday. The Gaels will compete in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Novice 4 events. Heats for the Novice 4 and Varsity 8 take place Saturday, and all finals are on Sunday.
The Gaels enter this weekend's regatta with plenty of momentum, having performed extremely well at last weekend's NorCal/SoCal Showdown at Redwood Shores. SMC won every race it competed in on day one against Santa Clara and UC Davis, then took two of three from San Diego State the next day.
Those same teams will be in the water at Lake Natoma, along with several others that the Gaels have competed against this season.
The WIRA Championships represent the first of a two straight regattas at Lake Natoma for Saint Mary's. The Gaels will return to the Sacramento area on May 18 when they participate in the West Coast Conference Championships.
