MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team had its last two matches of the spring today when they took on Dominican University and the California Storm a semi pro women's team.
The Gaels started the day taking on Dominican University and as it has been all spring the coaching staff stressed the individual performance of players within the team concept.
The Gaels dominated time of possession and total number of passes on the day with the Gaels connecting 197 passes compared to its opponent only connecting 48. Nicole Schultz and Khalya Jones combined for the shutout.
The Gaels got goals from freshman defenders Corin Hernandez and Noria Mitchell and two goals from all league performer Vicki Shimkus.
An emphasis all spring has been playing "progressive possession " which was no more evident as Noria's goal was a culmination of a 32 pass build up," said head coach Kai Edwards.
"We held our self to a high standard today as we have all spring and we were able to reward ourselves with a shutout and we finished our chances. "
In the 2nd match of the day the Gaels took on the always powerful California Storm. The Gaels did very well layering their attacking in their buildup creating chance after chance .
The goals came from ,under 20 Canadian International , Caroline Beaulne off a top quality final pass from Vicki. All League performer and new to the front line Melinda Madden finished two goals and Freshman Madison Salom scored a goal off a build up that started with a connected pass from the Gaels goal keeper.
" Today was a great way to finish the spring," said Edwards. "In the spring we focus on the performance and today we had another great performance . The final result is not that important in the spring for us . Today we made ourselves better and prepared us for results in the fall. "
