MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's freshmen Katie Alioto and Maclayne Marr share SMC Student-Athlete of the Week honors this week after registering a pair of noteworthy performances over the weekend.
Alioto lowered her personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by five seconds, finishing third at the Brutus Hamilton Open with a time of 11:12.16. Competing in her first season in the steeplechase, she has shown consistent improvement throughout the season. In last weekend's race at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Alioto finished behind only runners from Cal and San Francisco.
Last fall, the Aptos, Calif. native was named the SMC cross country team's Newcomer of the Year and set a freshman class record for the 6k at the NCAA West Regional.
Marr, a native of Mona Vale, New South Wales, Australia, fired a 6-under par 210 to finish fourth at the PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. He carded rounds of 74-70-66 and was the Gaels' highest finisher, despite the fact that he was playing as an individual and his score did not count toward the team's total.
His final round score of 6-under par 66 ties for the fourth-lowest single-round score in Saint Mary's history and was the second-lowest for a Gael this season.
Marr played in a total of six events as a freshman this season and is sixth on the team in stroke average at 75.33.
