– The Saint Mary’s baseball team (17-27, 8-7 West Coast Conference) hosts San Diego (26-19, 10-8 WCC) on May 3-5 at Louis Guisto Field. Game times are 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday is also senior day as the eight SMC seniors will be honored in a short ceremony before first pitch.
The Gaels enter the weekend having won six straight WCC games. That streak is close to SMC’s all-time best of eight straight WCC wins set during the 1991 season. SMC won seven straight WCC games in 1987.
Saint Mary’s is led by Brenden Kalfus who also leads the WCC with his .387 average. Kalfus also enters the weekend having hit safely in 26 consecutive games.
Markus Melgosa (.350), Shawn O’Brien (.323) and Riley Heinzer (.313) are all hitting over .300. As a team, SMC is second in the WCC in batting average with a team average of .280.
Collin Ferguson leads the Gaels with 70 total bases, including 12 doubles and four home runs. DonAndre Clark leads the WCC with his 18 stolen bases.
On the mound, the Gaels are led by Ben Griset with a 4-2 record and 2.71 ERA. Jordan Mills is right behind with a 4-3 record and 2.23 ERA. Ryan Brockett has been SMC’s third starter with a 4-5 record and 3.63 ERA.
Patrick Keane has a team-high six saves and set the SMC all-time saves record last weekend with his 17th career save.
San Diego is led by NCAA home run leader Kris Bryant. The slugger has hit 22 home runs with 46 RBI. Teammate Dillon Haupt has power as well with nine home runs and 16 doubles. As a team, USD hits at a .273 clip.
On the mound, PJ Conlon leads the way with a 7-0 record and 1.21 ERA. Max Homick is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA and Dylan Covey is 3-4 with a 5.54 ERA.
