The Dodd/Shaw tandem quickly took the first set against FIU with strong winds and some rain. As the weather improved, FIU improved as well, as the SMC No. 1 pair nearly knocked off FIU as the Gaels were seeded 13th and FIU at No. 4.
The loss in the championship round completed a strong inaugural season for the Gaels. Saint Mary’s went 8-2 in team competitions, earning a national ranking of No. 9 in the nation.
SMC’s No. 1 pair was selected to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships and carried a 3-1 record in pool play to advance to the national championship round on Sunday. Overall, Dodd/Shaw finished the year with a 11-4 mark.
