MORAGA, Calif. -- Five matches against teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament highlight the Saint Mary's men's soccer team's 2013 schedule, revealed today by Gaels' head coach Adam Cooper.
Saint Mary's will open its season at home against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion Air Force in a 4 p.m. kickoff at Saint Mary's Stadium. Two days later, the Gaels welcome Long Island University to Moraga for a 2 p.m. kickoff during the Saint Mary's Weekend of Welcome - which marks the arrival of students to campus for fall semester classes.
After a Sept. 8 match at defending Big West Conference champion Cal State Northridge, SMC returns home for matches against Big West division champion UC Davis (Sept. 12) and Sacramento State (Sept. 14).
The Gaels travel to Chicago on the weekend of Sept. 20-22 for a pair of challenging matches at the Lakeside Classic, a tournament hosted by Big Ten Conference champion Northwestern that includes matchups against the host Wildcats and Mid-American Conference tournament finalist Northern Illinois.
SMC concludes its non-conference schedule with a Sept. 29 match at South Bay rival San Jose State.
West Coast Conference play opens Oct. 4 with the first of a pair of home games against Pacific Northwest rivals Gonzaga and Portland (Oct. 6). Other WCC home games include Santa Clara on Oct. 13, Loyola Marymount on Nov. 1, San Diego on Nov. 3 and the program's annual Senior Day contest against San Francisco on Nov. 6.
Saint Mary's finishes the regular season with consecutive WCC road games at Santa Clara, Portland and Gonzaga.
