MORAGA, Calif. -- The final challenge of the 2012-13 season awaits West Coast Conference Player of the Year Jenny Jullien this week as the Gaels' No. 1 player heads to Illinois to take part in the NCAA Singles Championships.
The tournament will be held in Urbana, Ill. and will be hosted by the University of Illinois. Singles action starts Wednesday and continues through May 27.
Only a junior, Jullien earned the WCC's automatic bid to the tournament after going 17-7 this spring and becoming the second Gael to earn the conference's top honor at the end of the season. She joins Alex Poorta as the only Gaels women's tennis players to participate in the NCAA Singles Championships,
The native of Perpignan, France was especially good in conference, going 7-1 in the regular season. Her standout season played a big part in Saint Mary's claiming a share of the WCC regular season championship with a 7-1 record of its own.
Jullien will be familiar with a number of her competitors this week.
She faced a ranked opponent 17 times this season, and 10 of those players will be in action this week in Illinois. Three of those players -- UCLA's Robin Anderson, Cal's Anett Schutting and Stanford's Krista Hardebeck -- earned a top 16 seed.
