MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's outfielder Cole Norton signed on the dotted line with the Colorado Rockies this week, as the club announced Friday that the 39th-round draft pick was one of 16 players who agreed to contract terms.
Norton, a 5-foot-8 native of Aurora, Colo., appeared in 40 games in 2013 for the Gaels. He made 23 starts, hitting .292 in West Coast Conference play. That mark was good for fifth among SMC starters in conference play.
He also had six multi-hit games, with five coming against WCC opponents. He hit two home runs this season, and finished with 22 hits and 14 runs on the season.
This season capped a solid career in Moraga for Norton, who hit .262 as a junior and .290 as a sophomore. During his junior season, he played the role of catalyst atop the lineup, hitting .449 as a leadoff hitter and .310 with runners in scoring position.
Norton will report to either Rookie Level Grand Junction (Pioneer League) or Short Season Single-A Tri-City (Northwest League) to get his professional career started.
