MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's pitcher Ben Griset got his pro career underway this weekend, as the Tampa Bay Rays officially announced that the southpaw has signed his first pro contract with the club.
Griset, a native of Gustine, Calif., was Saint Mary's highest-drafted player in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Rays selected the 6-foot lefty in the 13th round.
Serving as Saint Mary's Friday starter throughout the 2013 season, Griset posted solid numbers to go along with some outstanding performances.
He finished with a 4-4 record, compiling a 3.62 ERA. He was a workhorse, pitching at least six innings in seven starts.
Griset tossed three complete games, striking out 12 in a win over Utah Valley. He also threw back-to-back complete games against San Francisco and Georgetown, striking out 10 with no earned runs in each game.
