MORAGA, Calif. -- Even with the Saint Mary's men's tennis team spread across the globe for the summer, play hasn't stopped as the Gaels continue to play and prepare for the 2013-14 season.
One Gael who has performed particularly well has been senior Tuomas Manner. The native of Pori, Finland made a great run at the recently completed Finnish National Championships, reaching the quarterfinals in singles and winning the doubles title with partner Anssi Raasio.
The road to the championship certainly wasn't easy for Manner and Raasio, who competed from June 23-27 in Helsinki. A 6-4, 6-3 win in the semifinals sent the duo to the championship match, and the match started well as Manner and Raasio took the first set 6-2 against Jusso Laitinen and Ristomatti Lanne.
Laitinen and Lanne would rally, winning the second set 6-4. That sent the match to a super-tiebreaker third set, with Manner and Raasio prevailing 10-8 to take the title. The win gave Manner his first medal on the men's level in Finland.
The success in doubles isn't a surprise for Manner, who went 10-9 at No. 2 doubles with partner Samuel Bloore for the Gaels last season. Manner also reached the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional singles draw last fall, and will return to the Gaels this season as one of the team's senior leaders.
