MORAGA, Calif. -- Trevor Newquist, last season's West Coast Conference Defender of the Year, has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the Saint Mary's men's soccer program, according to head coach Adam Cooper.
Newquist, a native of San Diego, graduated from Saint Mary's last spring after a playing career that included four-straight mentions on various all-WCC honor teams. Last year, he was a first-team all-WCC selection, was named the league's defender of the year and was an all-Far West Region honoree by the National Soccer Coaches Assocaition of America.
During his four years at Saint Mary's, Newquist was a member of the most successful class in school history with a 40-25-16 record, the program's first WCC title and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2011, he was named the national player of the week by the NSCAA after scoring two goals at Brown in the NCAA round of 16, including the game winner in overtime.
Newquist joins Cooper and assistant coaches Chris Brown and Peter Lowry to form the Gaels' men's soccer coaching staff. Saint Mary's opens its 2013 season on August 30 with a 4 p.m. match against Air Force at Saint Mary's Stadium.
