MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team kicked off the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over Grand Canyon. The Gaels outshot GCU 20-5 and cruised to the victory.
“The No. 1 thing was the shutout,” said head coach Kai Edwards. “It’s something we worked on all of preseason… but also three class-act goals.”
Saint Mary’s got on the board first as Caroline Beaulne scored from 10 yards out on assists from Vicki Shimkus and Mary Fraser. The goal turned out to be the game-winning goal as SMC led 1-0 in the 28th minute.
The Gaels would hold a 1-0 lead at the break, with SMC holding a 9-5 edge in shots.
The second-half was all Gaels as SMC outshot GCU 11-0. In the 64th minute, Briana Campos delivered a strike from 15 yards out on the right side, taking a nice touch pass from Jessica Imbrie.
Melissa Madrid added a late score in the 76th minute on a straight-away strike from eight yards out assisted by Samantha Dion and Madison Salom.
Fraser led the SMC attack with six shots, while Beaulne took four attempts. Melinda Madden took three shots while Madrid and Jessica Castillo took two shots apiece.
Kaeli Schmidt earned the shutout with three saves in her first collegiate match.
“They got the result today but we will have to play much better on Sunday,” said Edwards. “We are on the road playing a top-25 team.”
Saint Mary’s is back in action on Sunday when it travels to No. 11 San Diego State at 1:00 p.m.
