MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team (1-1) heads to Colorado for two matches this week. On Friday, the Gaels square off with No. 25 Denver (2-0) at 4:30 p.m. (PT) on the Pioneer campus. On Sunday, the Gaels make the trip to Boulder to take on Colorado (2-0) at 12:00 p.m.

Last week the Gaels opened 2013 with a 3-0 victory at home over Grand Canyon. The Gaels outshot GCU 20-5 as Caroline Beaulne, Briana Campos and Melissa Madrid each scored goals. The SMC defense played well as freshman goalkeeper Kaeli Schmidt recorded her first collegiate shutout in her first match.

The Gaels played a strong game on the road at No. 11 San Diego State, falling to the Aztecs 1-0. The Gaels took nine shots and had a shot deflect of the post in the first half. After a scoreless first half, SDSU scored the lone goal of the match in the 54th minute and held on for the win.

Both Denver and Colorado played in the Third Annual Colorado Cup last weekend. Denver defeated Colorado College 2-1 in overtime on Friday. On Sunday, the Pioneers defeated Northern Colorado 3-0. DU’s Kristen Hamilton scored two goals with one assist, while Nicholette Digiacomo, Francesca Garzelloni and Jessy Battelli also scored. Cassidy Rey started both matches in goal and made 11 total saves in the two wins.

Colorado opened the year with a 3-0 win over Northern Colorado and a 1-0 win over Colorado College. The Buffaloes return 16 players, including 13 letter-winners and eight starters. Four of the team’s top five scorers return, led by senior Anne Stuller, who netted eight goals and had two assists last season.

After this weekend, the Gaels will take their longest (distance) road trip, heading to Wisconsin for the Marquette Classic on September 6-8. SMC will take on host and nationally ranked Marquette on Friday, then face Loyola Chicago on Sunday.

The Gaels return home on September 13-15 when it hosts the Saint Mary’s College Classic.
