DENVER, Colo. – The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team outshot No. 25 Denver but the Pioneers came away with the 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon. The Gaels fired off 11 shots on goal, compared to the five by DU, but SMC could not connect in the end.
“We were unlucky not to score multiple goals today… two balls off the post and many other chances,” said head coach Kai Edwards. “We played very well vs. a top team in the country on the road.”
Denver scored in the 24th minute as the ball was headed into the goal off a cross. The Gaels would hold a 4-1 edge in shots on goal in the first half but the Pioneers held the 1-0 advantage.
Saint Mary’s kept the pressure on DU in the second half, taking shot after shot but could not muster a score. Denver added a late goal in the 74th minute to capture the 2-0 win.
The Gaels outshot the Pioneers 19-16, and doubled DU’s shots on goal total. Melinda Madden and Jessica Castillo fired off three shots on goal apiece, while Mary Fraser took two shots on goal. Castillo took six total shots while Fraser attempted five.
Kaeli Schmidt recorded three saves in goal for SMC.
“We are a better team after this match,” said Edwards. “We now get ready for Boulder.”
Saint Mary’s is back in action on Sunday, September 1 when it takes on Colorado in Boulder. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. (PT).
