SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After scoring a pair of important goals on his debut weekend as a Gael, Saint Mary's forward Carlo Eikani is the inaugural West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the 2013 season.
For his efforts, he was also named the Muscle Milk SMC Student-Athlete of the Week.
A native of Alamo, Calif., Eikani scored twice to lead the Gaels to victories over Air Force and LIU Brooklyn at Saint Mary's Stadium. His 47th minute strike proved to be the game-winner in Friday's 3-1 victory over the Falcons, while his 83rd minute goal clinched the Gaels' 2-0 shutout against LIU.
"Carlo had a good first weekend," said SMC head coach Adam Cooper, whose Gaels are undefeated after two games for the fifth-straight season. "He had a nice start to his college career with two well taken goals that each played a big role in helping us secure two wins to start our season."
Eikani attempted seven shots in the two matches, five of which forced a save by the opponent goalkeeper. Against Air Force, he directed a header from sophomore Alan Williams over the outstretched arms of keeper Joe Spashock and into the back of the net for his first career goal.
Yesterday, against LIU, he received a pass from freshman Ben Braman just outside the top of the penalty area, held off the LIU defender to create a 1v1 chance against keeper John Connolly and cooly finished with a low left-footed shot give the Gaels a 2-0 lead going into the final minutes of the match
Saint Mary's returns to action Sunday with a 4 p.m. match at undefeated CSU Northridge before returning home for a pair of games Sept. 12 and 14 against local rivals UC Davis and Sacramento State.
