MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Lehigh in the Saint Mary’s College Classic on Sunday afternoon. Lehigh ended up as the Classic champion with a 1-0-1 record and a tie-breaker over Pacific.
Lehigh scored early as Classic Most Valuable Player Murphee Greeley stole the ball around mid-field and drove inside the box and had a one-on-one with the keeper, getting the ball past the tall Kaeli Schmidt in the 7th minute.
“We played an organized Lehigh team today,’ said head coach Kai Edwards. “They capitalized on our mistake and scored a good goal in the second-half.”
Saint Mary’s outshot Lehigh 13-4 in the second-half and 19-8 in the match. The Gaels went to a more offensive-minded line-up after falling behind by two scores, including defender Casidee Lynch moving up to forward and taking four shots.
“We played ok, but not to the SMC standard,” said Edwards. We will watch video and prepare for next week.”
Briana Campos took three shots while Samantha Dion and Melissa Madrid added two shots for the Gaels.
Schmidt made two saves and faced eight shots by the Mountain Hawks.
Representing the Gaels on the all-tournament team was Campos and Jessica Castillo.
Saint Mary’s is back in action next week taking on Stanford. The Gaels and Cardinal kick-off at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday on the Stanford campus.
