BREMERTON, Wash. -- Senior Dalan Refioglu shot an even par 144 to lead the Saint Mary's golf team to a ninth place finish after the first day of competition at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
The Gaels posted team scores of 291-295 for a 10-over par 586 and finished the first two rounds just one stroke behind Washington State and five behind USC. Host Washington leads the tournament with a 2-round total of 11-under par 565.
The 15-team field returns to the 7,124-yard, par 72 Olympic course tomorrow for the final round. The Gaels will be paired with WSU and the Trojans in the final 18 holes.
Cody Robinson is tied for 24th place with rounds of 72-73 for a 1-over par 145. Sophomore Maclayne Marr sits in a tie for 38th at 4-over 148, while junior Tye Gabriel rebounded from a first round 78 to fire a 1-over par 73 in the afternoon and is in a tie for 51st at 7-over 151. Senior Alex Bungert is tied for 61st with rounds of 76-77.
Senior Nick Sako, playing a separate 47-golfer individual-only tournament on Gold Mountain's Cascade Course, carded rounds of 71-73 for a 2-over par 144. He is in a three-way tie for 10th place.
Refioglu, who is tied for 15th place among the 75-player field, carded a 2-under par 70 in the morning's first round. He started quickly, registering a birdie on the 460-yard par 4 first hole. He also birdied the 617-yard ninth hole to finish the front nine at 1-under par. He fired two birdies on the back, but bogeyed 17 to finish at 2-under.
In the afternoon, he was even par through 16 before suffering a pair of bogeys to complete the round at 2-over.
Next week, Saint Mary's hosts its annual Saint Mary's Invitational at Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
