BREMERTON, Wash. -- The Saint Mary's golf team made a final round move up the leaderboard today, registering its best round of the season and rising four places to finish in a tie for fifth at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
The Gaels shot a 1-under par 287 in today's final round to finish the 54-hole tournament with scores of 292-295-287 for a 10-over par 874. SMC tied BYU for fifth place in the 15-team field and finished just three strokes behind fourth-place San Diego.
Host Washington ran away with the team title on Gold Mountain's Olympic Course with a 17-under par 847, which was eight strokes better than second-place Arizona State. Oregon State finished third at 4-over.
"I felt like we finally settled down today and got past the nerves that usually come with the start of a new season," said SMC head coach Scott Hardy. "We started and finished well today, which is always the key to posting a good team score. Hopefully, we can build on this round and carry the momentum into next week's Saint Mary's Invitational."
Individually, senior Dalan Refioglu led the Gaels with an 11th place tie among the 75 golfers with rounds of 70-74-71 for a 54-hole total of 1-under par 215. Classmate Cody Robinson finished in a five-way tie for 20th place at 2-over par 218.
Sophomore Maclayne Marr carded rounds of 73-75-73 for a 5-over par 221 and tied seven other golfers for 32nd place overall. Senior Alex Bungert and junior Tye Gabriel fied for 46th overall at 8-over par. Bungert joined Refioglu in posting the team's low round of the day with a 1-under 71.
Senior Nick Sako fired rounds of 71-73-71 on Gold Mountain's adjacent Cascade Course to finish seventh among 47 golfers playing in a separate individuals-only tournament.
Saint Mary's hosts its annual Saint Mary's Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. In addition to the host Gaels, the 19-team field includes Akron, Ball State, California, CSU Northridge, Florida Gulf Coast, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, North Carolina State, Oregon, St. John's, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
