MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s cross country team is back in action this week at the Hornet Jamboree on Friday. The meet will take place at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.

“This weekend's Hornet Jamboree serves as a preview for the NCAA-West championships held on the same course in a month,” said associate head coach Tom Kloos. “It is a good opportunity to get familiar with the course, and see how we stack up against some other teams from the West Region at this point.”

The Saint Mary’s men’s team is participating in the 8000m which begins at 9:30 a.m. The meet will serve as both a West Regional preview meet and an inter-regional “points accumulator” featuring a competitive inter-regional field of teams looking to earn their way to the national meet in November.

This will be the Gaels first meet since the WCC Championships Preview meet in Malibu on September 14th. The Gaels finished second as Rajpaul Pannu was SMC’s top finisher while Zach Hansen and Rhett Baynes recorded PR’s.

“In our last outing (WCC Preview) we ran well through our first three runners, but we'll be looking for someone to step up in the 4th and 5th positions if we are going to achieve our team goals next month in Championship season,” said Kloos.

Haggin Oaks is a 36-hole golf course which sits on 850 acres in the heart of Sacramento, just 20 minutes from Sacramento International Airport and three miles from Point West/Cal Expo.

The cross country layout will be on the Acrade Creek course using nine different holes following an outer and inner horseshoe design. The men’s course loop is approximately 3,300 meters run three times as the inner horseshoe can be cut out on the first loop of each course to configure 8,000m.

The Start and Finish areas are adjacent to one another and are right at the entrance to the course near the clubhouse and awards pavilion. The course remains over 30m wide throughout the entire first 1000m of the race. The course finishes with a forgiving 300m finish down the 9th fairway.

After the Hornet Jamboree, the Gaels will be back in action at the Santa Clara Invitational on October 19th in Sunnyvale.
