SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Saint Mary's freshman defender Alex Braman was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week today after scoring his first two collegiate goals on the opening weekend of league play.
Braman scored the tying goal in a 1-1 draw against Gonzaga on Friday, then added another game-tying score in SMC's 3-2 overtime victory Sunday against the University of Portland.
"Alex had a great weekend for us on both ends of the field," said SMC head coach Adam Cooper. "He came through with two really important goals and he played very well defensively."
Braman, his twin brother Ben and junior Bobby Conner are the only three Saint Mary's players to have started all 10 matches this season. He is the team's scoring leader with five points on his two goals and an assist.
Against Gonzaga, Braman made a near-post run as teammate Michael Semenza took a corner kick in the 55th minute with the Gaels down a goal. His header went past GU keeper Ryan Caballero, who had only conceded three previous goals, to earn SMC a draw against the Bulldogs.
On Sunday against the Pilots, he tied the score a 1-1 in the 32nd minute of the match by poking a far post free kick from Will Kendall past Portland keeper Jason Dodson. Later in the match, Braman and Dodson collided on a set piece and both players left the game due to injury.
Braman is the Gaels' second WCC Player of the Week selection this season. Redshirt freshman Carlo Eikani earned the honor after scoring twice in opening weekend wins over Air Force and LIU Brooklyn.
Saint Mary's is tied with Loyola Marymount at the top of the WCC standings after the first weekend of play. The Gaels are 3-4-3 overall and 1-0-1 in league play and return to action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at the University of San Francisco.
SMC returns home Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest against longtime South Bay rival Santa Clara at Saint Mary's Stadium. Tickets are available by visiting the Tickets link on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Athletic Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx (4689).
