SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Saint Mary's men's tennis players Joakim Norstrom and Tuomas Manner will head across the Bay Bridge this week to take part in the annual Battle in the Bay Challenge hosted by San Francisco.
Both Norstrom and Manner competed at the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. two weeks ago, with Norstrom going 1-1 in singles matches and Manner dropping his pair of matches.
Manner competed in doubles with partner James Markiewicz at last weekend's Aggie Invitational in Davis, while Norstrom did not play.
They'll be tested again this week with a strong field set to line up at the California Club. Players from No. 2 UCLA (last year's final rankings), No. 5 USC, No. 7 Duke, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 17 Cal and No. 42 Stanford will all compete in the three-day affair. 32 players will take part in the singles main draw, with 16 doubles teams competing as well.
After Norstrom and Manner play in San Francisco, the entire Gaels squad will be back in action next weekend as Saint Mary's plays host to the ITA Northwest Regional at Korth Tennis Complex. Play begins on Friday, Oct. 18 and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 22.
