MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team is back in action on Friday when it hosts No. 14 Santa Clara at 4 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Stadium. The match-up with the Broncos is the last match of the current four-match home-stand for the Gaels.
Saint Mary’s enters the week with a 1-1 mark in West Coast Conference action, with a win over San Francisco and an overtime loss against Pacific. Last year the Gaels dropped a 2-0 decision to Santa Clara in Moraga.
Saint Mary’s is led by Briana Campos with nine points coming off four goals and an assist. Caroline Beaulne and Melissa Madrid have scored two goals each, while Vicki Shimkus is the team leader in assists with three. As a team, the Gaels have 12 goals and 15 assists.
Mary Fraser is the team leader with 25 shots, while Jessica Castillo has taken 19 and Melinda Madden 18. Madden has a team-high 12 shots on goal.
The goalkeeper has been Kaeli Schmidt who has 58 saves and a 1.68 goals against average in 1122 minutes.
Santa Clara opened the conference season with wins at home against San Diego 1-0 and No. 22 BYU 2-1. The Broncos are led by Julie Johnston with seven goals and three assists, while Sofia Huerta and Morgan Marlborough have scored five goals apiece. SCU has played two road matches this year, a loss at No. 7 Virginia on August 25 and a win at Fresno State on August 31.
The SCU goalkeeper is Andi Tostanoski with 56 saves and a 1.11 goals against average in 1050 minutes.
After this week the Gaels head back on the road for the first time since mid-September. The Gaels head to Los Angeles to face Loyola Marymount on Friday, October 25th.
