MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's College graduate Bryan Navarro has been appointed to the newly-created position of director of creative video for the department of athletics at his alma mater.
Navarro, who graduated magna cum laude from Saint Mary's in 2010 with a degree in communications, will direct all live and on-demand video production within the structure of the department's communications unit. He will also serve as the department liaison with the West Coast Conference's Digital Network, work with the College's Communications Department, oversee a student internship program in the area of video production and distribute game highlights to local, regional and national television media outlets.
"We are really fortunate to have someone with Bryan's talent and experience join our department and the fact that he is a Saint Mary's alum makes it a perfect fit," said Richard Kilwien, SMC's associate athletic director for external affairs. "The student-athletes and staff at Saint Mary's have such great stories. With the addition of Bryan, we have a variety of skill-sets within our communications staff that will be able to communicate effectively across a wide variety of platforms."
Saint Mary's athletics produces nearly 150 live audio and/or video events per year via Gaels Live on the department's official athletics website - SMCGaels.com. In addition, the site contains hundreds of video features, highlight packges and interviews from the school's 17 intercollegiate sports.
"I'm excited to be back on campus, in the gyms, and on the fields at Saint Mary's," said Navarro. "I treasure my time as a student here and am proud of the video work I did then. I'm looking forward to producing many more videos about all of our great student-athletes and programs."
A native of nearby Oakley, Calif., Navarro has spent the last few years working in television news as a multimedia journalist and freelance video producer. For the last 14 months, he has worked in for KOLD-TV and KMSB-TV, the CBS and Fox affiliates in Tucson, Ariz. After graduation in 2010, he spent two years working for KDRV-TV, the ABC affiliate in Medford, Ore.
As an undergraduate at Saint Mary's, he served as the general manager for GaelVision - a student-run on-campus television station - and served as a reporter/photographer for the WCC at the 2010 league basketball tournament in Las Vegas.
He has continued to be involved with the College since graduation, producing numerous video projects for the campus communcations department. Navarro traveled to the 2010 and 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournaments with the Gaels and produced a variety of feature videos.
