STANFORD, Calif. -- Jenny Jullien, Audrey Leitz and Catherine Leduc brought home singles wins and the team of Leitz and Jade Frampton advanced in doubles as the Saint Mary's women's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day at the ITA Northwest Regional at Stanford.
Seeded No. 6, Jullien earned a first round bye on Friday and played her first match of the tournament against Stanford's Lindsey Kostas under the afternoon sun. Jullien would have little trouble, scoring a 6-0, 6-2 win to advance to Saturday's round of 32. She will face Pacific's Hana Ritterova at 10 a.m.
Leitz and Leduc also found success Friday, each winning two matches to advance in the main draw. Leitz won her opener against Pacific's Gergana Boncheva 6-3, 6-1, then knocked off Portland's Saroop Dhatt 6-2, 6-1. Leitz will face Stanford's Carol Zhao on Saturday.
Leduc's strong day added to Saint Mary's win total. She would win her first match 6-2, 6-3 over Fresno State's Sofya Malysheva, then the junior from Quebec, Canada would outlast Portland's Tori Troesch 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's round of 32 match against No. 4 seed Krista Hardebeck of Stanford.
In doubles, the team of Leitz and Jade Frampton was the only Gaels pair to play on Friday and the duo held their own, defeating San Francisco's Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Thyra Taune 8-3. Leitz and Frampton will be one of three SMC teams in doubles action Saturday, joining the teams of Jullien and Danielle Flores and Leduc and Elizabeth Searl.
