STANFORD, Calif. -- Saint Mary's women's tennis player Jenny Jullien continued to pile up the impressive results at this year's ITA Northwest Regional as she punched her ticket to the semifinals with a win Sunday at Taube Tennis Center.
Jullien's road to the semis was anything but easy. She squared off Sunday with Stanford's Carol Zhao, a freshman from Ontario, Canada who earned the ITA's No. 1 newcomer ranking coming into the fall season.
And, the talent on court was evident in the first set as Jullien had to fight her way to a 6-3 victory to take the early lead. The two players went back and forth again in the second set, with Zhao keeping pace as Jullien tried to close out the match.
Jullien would get her chance late in the set, as a return sent long by Zhao put the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year up a break at 5-4. Serving for the set, Jullien couldn't quite put the freshman away though, as Zhao did not drop a point in breaking back to make it 5-5.
That favor would be returned quickly. Jullien did not lose a point on Zhao's next service game, scoring another break to go up 6-5. This time, Jullien capitalized, with a great volley making the score 30-0. A Zhao shot found the net for 40-0 and, on match point, Jullien's first serve would be returned into the net to give the Gaels' standout a 7-5 set win and match victory.
Next up for the sixth-seeded Jullien is a date with another Stanford freshman, No. 12 seed Caroline Doyle. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. and can be streamed live online through Stanford's tennis website.
In doubles play, Jullien and partner Danielle Flores also played Sunday with a chance to advance to the semifinals. Though they would fight gamely, the Gaels would fall 8-5 to Stanford's Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay.
