MORAGA, Calif. -- When the Saint Mary's volleyball team stormed the court in jubilation Saturday just minutes after finishing an epic comeback win over No. 19-ranked BYU, Dalas Dodd found herself right in the middle of the celebration.
It was an appropriate spot for a player who so often ends up right in the middle of every play.
Dodd enjoyed a historic performance Saturday, helping her teammates score a thrilling five-set win over the Cougars at McKeon Pavilion. For her contributions, Dodd has been named this week's Muscle Milk SMC Student-Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore from Manhattan Beach, Calif. compiled a total of 100 assists in two matches last week, adding 14 digs, three aces and five blocks in matches against San Diego and BYU.
Saturday's win over the Cougars was where Dodd really made her mark. She finished the match with 68 assists, a mark that ties her with Kapua Kamana'o for the fourth-most ever in a single match by a Gael. She also made her presence felt at the net, combining with Natalie Loos for a key block in the fifth set that gave Saint Mary's a two-point lead.
"Dalas did a really good job of spreading it out and giving everyone opportunities to get kills," said teammate Jordan Shaw.
It wasn't a new phenomenon for Dodd, who has been a standout all year long for the Gaels. Entering this week's matches, Dodd ranks first in the West Coast Conference and 14th in the country in assists per set with 11.47. She's also first on the team in aces with 32.
Dodd and the Gaels get back to work on Thursday when they visit Pacific for a 7 p.m. showdown on Halloween night. The match will be streamed live through Pacific's website. Saint Mary's returns to McKeon Pavilion next week to host Santa Clara on Thursday at 6 p.m. and San Francisco on Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets to both matches are available by clicking the Tickets link on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Athletic Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx.
