MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's women's tennis player Jenny Jullien will complete another school first Thursday when she participates in the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
Jullien will play her first round match against a familiar foe. She'll square off with Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo at 10 a.m. (PDT). If Jullien wins, she would advance to the round of 16 to face either Cal's Zsofi Susanyi or Georgia's Maho Kowase.
Just over a week after becoming the first Gael ever to participate in an ITA Regional final, Jullien was selected to the prestigious field of 32 as one of just two players from the Northwest region. ITA Regional champion Kristie Ahn of Stanford will not compete, so Jullien will be joined at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center by Cal's Zsofi Susanyi, who made the semifinals of the Regional at Stanford. Jullien will be one of two West Coast Conference representatives, joining Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo.
The reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year made an impressive run at the Regional, winning her first five matches before falling to Ahn in the final. That streak included a win over Stanford freshman Carol Zhao, who entered the fall as the No. 1 ranked newcomer in all of college tennis according to the ITA rankings.
An impressive fall campaign has served as an extension of last year's brilliance for Jullien. The native of Perpignan, France became the second Saint Mary's women's tennis player ever (Alex Poorta) to win WCC Player of the Year, finishing 17-8 in singles play during the spring. She competed in the NCAA Singles Tournament and also earned All-WCC honors in doubles with teammate Danielle Flores.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships begin on Nov. 7 and run through Nov. 10. Live scoring will be available though the ITA's event page, and live updates of Jullien's matches will be available through the @SMCGaels Twitter account.
