SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team suffered its first set back of the year, falling to Sacramento State in a shootout, 94-92 on Thursday night in The Nest. With the loss, SMC drops to 7-1 while Sac State improves to 5-1.

Saint Mary’s was led by Jackie Nared with 30 points and 12 rebounds while Danielle Mauldin added 24 points and 14 rebounds. Lauren Nicholson added 14 points and five rebounds while Kate Gaze added seven points, including her 1,000th career point.

Gaze hit a three-pointer out of the 12 min media timeout, giving the Gaels a 10-point lead. Saint Mary’s led by as many as 16 points in the first half, only to see CSUS cut the deficit to 46-42 at the break.

In the first half, Sac St. attempted 48 shots and 29 three-pointers. SMC shot 64.5 percent in the half, but allowed the Hornets to tally 13 offensive rebounds. SMC held a 27-17 rebounding edge at the break.

In the second half, CSUS rallied to tie up the game at the under 12 media at 63-63. The Hornets led 64-63. Mauldin sank a free-throw to end the CSUS 9-0 run and tied up the game at 64-64.

Sac State took a 72-70 lead with 7:10 remaining and later an 80-76 lead at the 5:32 mark. Out of a timeout, the Gaels started to use a full-court press to force CSUS into a quick turnover and Nicholson to Nared fast break basket.

Nared came down and hit a three pointer to pull SMC within one, but CSUS came back to hit its 15th three of the game to retake a four-point lead at 86-82 at the final media timeout with 2:58 remaining.

Hornets took a 92-86 lead under two minutes left after hitting their 16th three ball of the game. On the next possession, Nared was fouled on a three-pointer and converted all three free-throws to pull SMC within 92-89 with 1:44 left.

Later, Nared hit a deep three ball to pull SMC within 94-92 and the Gaels forced a stop on the final possession. SMC was unable to get a shot of on its final time down the court to potentially tie up the contest.

Saint Mary’s is back in action after finals week on Sunday, December 15th. SMC hosts UC Davis in McKeon Pavilion at 1:00 p.m.
