SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Brittany Sabatini of the Saint Mary’s softball team has been named to the 2014 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Softball Team, it was announced by the conference office. This is the first WCC softball season as the conference is made up of SMC, Santa Clara, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, Pacific and Brigham Young.

Sabatini was one of just five outfielders to make the Preseason All-WCC Team, joining outfielders Gordy Bravo (BYU), Stephanie Fisher (SCU), Megan Foglesong (Pacific) and Hannah Montalban (LMU). Other position players included Meghan Harman (LMU), Caitlin Rooney (USD), Kelly Scribner (SCU), Sterling Shuster (LMU) and Coco Tauali’I (BYU).

Other players included the top pitchers in Cassidy Coleman (USD) and Sydney Gouveia (LMU). The utlity players included Katie Manuma (BYU) and Alex Steinmehl (Pacific).

Sabatini is one of the Gaels’ top all-around players, with 136 starts in her three previous seasons at SMC. She holds a career .289 average with 123 hits, 15 home runs and 47 RBI. She has also stolen 15-of-18 career bases and features a strong arm with 11 career outfield assists (seven in 2013).

In the WCC Preseason Coaches Poll, BYU was deemed the favorite with 25 points (five first-place votes). The Cougars were followed by Pacific, LMU, USD, SMC and SCU.

Saint Mary’s opens the 2014 season next week at the New Mexico State Tournament.
