LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s softball team split two games on the second day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational, improving its record to 2-1 on the LMU campus.

The day was highlighted by the Gaels 9-8 win over Belmont. SMC belted three home runs in the game as Andrea Hazel, Sarah Lira and Brittany Sabatini all connected on round trippers. Lira earned the win on the mound, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, but no earned runs.

After scoring a run in the top of the first, SMC surrendered three runs to Belmont to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead. In the second frame, the Gaels exploded for five runs and batted around. Hazel led off the inning with a home run and Lira cleared the bases with a three-run homer to push SMC’s lead to 6-3 in the second.

In the SMC third, Sabatini doubled in Monika Reichhard to put SMC up 7-5.

The Gaels got the all-important insurance runs in the 6th as Sabatini homered and Christine Torrise had a RBI double.

Belmont made things interesting in the seventh inning, scoring three times and pulling within 9-8, but the Gaels held on for the win.

Earlier in the day, the Gaels spotted Lehigh three runs in the first three innings and the Gaels could not quite comeback, falling 4-2.

Saint Mary’s is back in action on Saturday when it plays one game against Lehigh at 9:00 a.m. on the LMU campus.
