SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The postseason begins Wednesday for the Saint Mary's women's tennis team as the Gaels start their quest for a fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament with a first round match at the West Coast Conference Championships at San Diego's Barnes Tennis Center.
After earning the No. 3 seed in this year's tournament, Saint Mary's begins play at 3 p.m. when it squares off against No. 10 Pacific. The Gaels finished third in the WCC standings this season with a 6-2 conference record and finished the regular season 12-7 overall. Pacific comes to the tournament with an overall record of 8-14 and the Tigers went 1-8 in conference.
Saint Mary's finished the regular season on a high note, beating Santa Clara 5-2 last Friday in the final home match of 2014. The day was especially significant for seniors Jade Frampton, Jenny Jullien and Audrey Leitz as Frampton clinched the win and Jullien scored the final point.
The Gaels also received a big round of kudos from conference coaches when the All-WCC teams were announced Monday. Jullien was named the WCC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and was joined on the first team by teammate Jamie Pawid. Frampton and Catherine Leduc each earned honorable mention and in doubles, Jullien and Parminder Kaur were named to the first team. Frampton and Danielle Flores were named honorable mention.
Pacific comes to San Diego looking to provide a positive final impression on its season. The Tigers have lost six in a row entering this week's action, with their last victory coming March 29 against Portland. When Saint Mary's and Pacific met on April 5, the Gaels won at No. 1 and 3 doubles before taking five of six singles matches to win by a final of 6-1.
If Saint Mary's wins Wednesday, the Gaels move on to Thursday's quarterfinal round where they will play either No. 6 San Francisco or No. 7 Gonzaga at 12:30 p.m. For updated brackets and news and notes from the tournament, visit WCCSports.com.
