SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Strong doubles play got the day started and the Saint Mary's women's tennis team only got better from there as the Gaels kicked off their stay at the West Coast Conference Championships with a convincing 4-0 win over Pacific at Barnes Tennis Center.
Saint Mary's, which entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, improves to 13-7 on the season. No. 9 seed Pacific ends it season with an 8-15 record.
The Gaels wasted no time announcing their presence in San Diego on Wednesday. Danielle Flores and Jade Frampton got the party started with a strong match at No. 2 doubles, beating Iveta Masarova and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz 8-4 for Saint Mary's first win. Not long after that, Jamie Pawid and Catherine Leduc finished off an 8-0 win over Francis Dean and Christiana Ferrari and Saint Mary's had the first point of the day.
As it turned out, SMC was just tuning up. Parminder Kaur pushed the score to 2-0 in favor of the Gaels with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Regina Suarez at No. 6. Next came Flores, who cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ruiz at No. 2.
Flores' win put the Gaels on the edge of finishing off a dominant day but it was Pawid who clinched the victory. SMC's No. 3 player had no trouble in beating Gergana Boncheva 6-0, 6-1, giving Saint Mary's its fourth point of the day and advancing the Gaels to the next round of the tournament. Had Pawid not won, she had plenty of backup as Saint Mary's was also up a set at No. 1, 4 and 5.
Next up for Saint Mary's is Thursday's 12:30 p.m. match against No. 6 San Francisco. When the two teams played in the regular season, the Gaels scored a 7-0 win in Moraga. Live scoring of the match, as well as complete tournament coverage, can be found at WCCSports.com.
