MORAGA, Calif. -- In her final trip to the West Coast Conference Championships, Saint Mary's women's tennis player Jenny Jullien continued her season of success, going 3-0 in four matches at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
For her performance, Jullien has been named the Muscle Milk SMC Student-Athlete of the Week.
As is normally the case, the two-time WCC Player of the Year lined up at No. 1 singles for the Gaels in all four matches they played in San Diego. She began the week with a match against Pacific's Hana Ritterova that did not finish thanks to Saint Mary's clinching the victory. Jullien was up a set when play was halted.
The next day, Jullien played a part in SMC's 4-0 win over San Francisco, beating Andrea Ka 6-0, 6-2 for the Gaels' third point of the day. She followed that performance with an equally impressive 6-1, 6-3 win over BYU's Mayci Jones in a Friday semifinal win that sent Saint Mary's to the championship match against Pepperdine.
In that final, Jullien got a chance to write perhaps the final chapter in a rivalry that has been among the WCC's best over the past two years. Squaring off yet again with No. 24-ranked Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine, Jullien lost the first set 7-6 with Guillermo winning 7-0 in the tie-breaker.
Jullien turned it around in the second, coming back to beat Guillermo 6-4 and force a third set. The No. 9-ranked player in the nation carried that momentum forward and only got stronger, beating Guillermo 6-1 in the third to score one of Saint Mary's two points on the day.
Next up for Jullien and the Gaels is Tuesday's 2:30 p.m. announcement of this year's NCAA Tournament field. Saint Mary's is hoping to be invited for a fifth straight season and will find out when the field is revealed on NCAA.com. The field for this year's NCAA Singles Tournament will be announced Wednesday and Jullien will hope to see her name included for the second straight year.
