MORAGA, Calif. -- The recent 35th annual Gael Golf Classic, presented by Syufy Enterprises and Chevron was another great success.
This year’s tournament, conducted at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton on Monday, May 12, set a record with estimated proceeds approaching $100,000 to benefit the Gael Athletic Fund - which directly supports our student-athletes and coaches. This financial achievement would not have been possible without generous and continued support from our sponsors and those who participated.
At the 19th hole reception, SMC women's basketball coach Paul Thomas highlighted a few of the achievements his program experienced this year and expressed to those in attendance how the Gael Athletic Fund allows his program, as well as the other 16 intercollegiate sport program, continue to grow and excel.
On the field of play, Saint Mary's athletic teams recently concluded another successful year. Saint Mary’s reports one of the highest graduation rates for student-athletes among NCAA Division I insitutions in the state of California off at 94 percent. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams advanced to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The sand volleyball team made its second consecutive appearance in the national championships.
Senior Jenny Jullien was chosen for the NCAA Championships and is the highest rated women’s tennis player in the history of the college, ranking ninth nationally. Last, but certainly not least, the Rugby team made history by winning its first USA Rugby DIA National Championship.
