Each week an incoming Saint Mary's student-athlete is highlighted on SMCGaels.com as the Muscle Milk Newcomer of the Week. This week's selection is incoming freshman women's tennis player Kareena Manji. A native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Manji recently graduated from Thousand Oaks High School.
Q: What made Saint Mary's the school for you?
A: I love the small classes, the gorgeous campus, nice weather, hard working devoted tennis team and the fact that SMC is so close to such a great city like San Francisco. But what made SMC stand out compared to other schools I visited/ looked at was the environment. When you're on the SMC campus, you feel at home and you feel like you belong.
Q: What's the one thing you're most looking forward to about living in Northern California?
A: Being close to San Francisco. (Southern Cal has a lot of the things Northern Cal does)
Q: What's the one thing you'll miss most about Southern California?
A: The one thing I will miss most about Southern California is probably going to be the weather. There is nowhere on the West Coast with weather like Southern California.
Q: On day one of college, what's your go-to meal in the cafeteria?
A: Definitely any and all carbohydrates. I need all the energy I can get! Bagels, bread, pasta, pizza, and of course a lemon lime Gatorade to wash it all down.
Q: What is Kareena Manji's hidden talent?
A: It's currently still hidden.
Q: Other favorite sports? Favorite teams in those sports? Favorite athlete?
A: Basketball and tennis (of course) but I am okay watching most sports. My favorite sports to play are soccer and tennis and my favorite athlete is Roger Federer.
Q: Grass, clay or hardcourt?
A: Hardcourt for sure.
Q: Best. Movie. Ever. Why?
A: I love a lot of movies, I can't pick JUST one ... Harry Potter series, Hunger Games, and anything Disney Pixar.
Q: If you weren't a tennis player, what would take up all of your time?
A: If I wasn't a tennis player I would probably spend more time with friends, travel more (and not for tournaments like we have been), and definitely try some new things which I haven't been able to do because I could get injured/ they take too much time away from tennis.
Q: Got a major picked out yet?
A: Business Administration is my intended major.
Q: Let's say you've got the headphones on before a game. What's on the pre-match mix?
A: I ALWAYS have headphones in before a match, but I don't have a certain mix I listen to. I just throw on Pandora, eat an energy bar, jump on court, and fight.
