NEWTON, Kan. -- Saint Mary's golfer Jonathan De Los Reyes survived a rough front nine holes to conclude stroke play at 3-over par and qualified for match play competition at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
The Antioch, Calif. native went 4-over on the front nine, but recovered with a 1-under on the back to card rounds of 71-74 for a 36-hole total of 3-over par 145. He finished in an eight-way tie for 38th place and joins the top 64 golfers in tomorrow's first round of match play.
"Johnny hit a rough patch between holes five and nine today, but settled down and played a good back nine at 1-under," said De Los Reyes' caddy, SMC head coach Scott Hardy. "He made a great save on number 11 from a buried lie. That was a clutch shot that gave him a little breathing room in qualifying for match play. The scores were a little higher today after the USGA lengthened the course."
De Los Reyes went 4-over on holes 5-8 with a pair of bogeys and a double during that stretch. He carded a birdie on the par 5 10th hole and made par on each of the remaining eight holes to finish at 3-over par for the round.
