INDIANAPOLIS — The Saint Mary’s track program has qualified its first-ever participants for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminary Round, as the NCAA announced Thursday that senior Zach Hansen and sophomore Gabe Arias will compete at the West Regional on May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan.
Hansen qualified in the men’s 1,500 meters. Arias qualified in the men’s 10,000 meters. The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminary Round will take place on May 26-28 on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. The first round of the 1,500 for Hansen will take place at 6 p.m. CDT on May 26. The 10,000-meter regional final for Arias will take place at 9:40 p.m. CDT also on May 26. The regional final round of the 1,500 meters, should Hansen advance, will take place at 6:45 p.m. on May 28. The meet will be streamed live by Kansas and can be seen by clicking here.
Hansen qualified for the NCAA West Regional meet in the 1,500 meters with the No. 11 time in the country at 3 minutes, 42.64 seconds. Hansen ran his qualifying time at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational on May 1, finishing fifth among NCAA Division I competitors at the meet and lowering his school and personal record.
Hansen is less than five seconds behind the top qualifying time of 3:37.74, ran by Washington’s Izaic Yorks. Yorks also ran his time at the Payton Jordan Invitational, though the two were in different heats.
Arias qualified for the NCAA West Regional meet in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:33.15. The time ranks him No. 40 in the country, though a log-jam of qualifiers has him less than 25 seconds away from the nation’s top-20 times. Arias ran his time at the prestigious Mt. SAC Invitational on April 14 in the invitational elite section. In that race he also broke the Saint Mary’s program record by 12 seconds.
